Anchored Leadership in Uncertain Times

The Leadership Lighthouses programme has been an incredible facilitation experience so far and I’m learning just as much as the leaders I’m working with. One of the most powerful reminders has been that leadership doesn’t have to look one way to be impactful. It can be quiet or bold, structured or intuitive, behind the scenes or out front and still create meaningful, lasting change.

Working closely with social purpose leaders brings this into sharp focus. These are individuals who are not just talking about change, they are living it. They are making a tangible difference to real people every single day. Their work ripples across communities locally, nationally and even internationally. Their collective voices have the power to shift systems and influence society for the better.

I also work with leaders across many sectors, including professional services, corporate environments, education and beyond. Every single one is navigating complexity. Every single one is trying to lead well, do right by their people and make a difference in their own context.

What I have consistently observed is this. The leaders who create the deepest, most sustainable impact are those who truly know themselves. There is a depth of self-awareness that goes beyond surface level reflection. It’s about understanding who you are when the pressure rises, what shapes your decisions and what sits at the core of how you lead. It’s about recognising both your strengths and your blind spots and choosing to lead with intention. Self-awareness is not a nice to have in leadership anymore, it’s essential.

We are leading in times that feel uncertain and, at times, heavy. The wider political and social climate asks more of leaders than ever before. There are competing demands, constant change and often a quiet pressure to hold everything together. It’s in these moments that leaders are required to dig deep and find what anchors them. To be clear on what they stand for, what matters most and how they want to lead, especially when it’s hard.

I often talk about the importance of being anchored as a leader. When you are anchored, you are not easily shaken. Your team feels it. Your decisions become clearer. Your leadership becomes steadier. In my experience, those with strong anchors consistently create the best outcomes, not just in results, but in how people feel being led by them.

For me, a key anchor is faith. That quiet, steady belief that even in challenging times there is purpose. That light follows darkness. That the work we are called to do, when led with integrity, courage and care, has meaning beyond what we can always see in the moment.

This is something I’ve reflected on in my book and something that continues to shape how I show up for the leaders I work with. Faith brings forth hope, and hope is not passive. It fuels resilience. It strengthens our determination to keep going, to keep building and to keep transforming what isn’t working into something better. And alongside all of this is community. We are not meant to lead alone. There is strength in shared wisdom, in honest conversation and in walking alongside others who understand both the responsibility and the privilege of leadership.

As we move into spring, with longer days and brighter light, I’m reminded of this. As leaders, we can remain grounded, steady and full of quiet strength, no matter what is happening around us.

If you’re at a point where you’re reflecting on your leadership, how you show up, what anchors you and how you want to lead next, I’d love to support you. And if you’re already considering working together, this might just be your moment to take that next step.

I’m here when you’re ready.
