The Beliefs We Hold: How to break free and move forward

We all create our own reality—often without even realising it. The way we think, feel, and act shapes not only how we see the world, but what we experience in it.

While positive thinking is often recommended, I believe real change goes deeper. It’s about gratitude. It’s about seeing the good, even when it’s hard. And it’s about trusting in what’s to come—even when the path ahead feels uncertain. For me, this belief is rooted in my faith. For you, it might come from a different place. What matters most is finding your anchor—something that grounds you when your thoughts threaten to pull you off course.

One of the most powerful tools I use with clients when they feel stuck is the Belief Cycle. It’s a simple yet transformative framework that helps make sense of how we can get trapped by limiting beliefs—and more importantly, how to break free from them.

What is the Belief Cycle?

The Belief Cycle shows how our thoughts influence our feelings, which drive our actions, shape our experiences, and ultimately reinforce the beliefs we hold. These beliefs then loop back and fuel our next thoughts—either keeping us stuck or helping us grow.

Belief Cycle

Let me show you how it works with a real example many people can relate to:

A Common Limiting Belief in Action:

Thought: “I hate networking, and I’m no good at it.”

Feeling: Dread. Anxiety. Tight chest. Hot flushes at the thought of speaking to senior colleagues.

Action: Avoid conversations with leaders. Overthink every word after you speak. Harsh self-criticism.

Experience: You’re overlooked. Colleagues don’t really know who you are or what you bring. Your name isn’t mentioned in rooms where opportunities are being created and shared.

Belief: “I’m not good at networking, and I never will be.”

Does this sound familiar?

How to Break the Cycle

Here’s the good news: you can interrupt this cycle at any stage. And small shifts can lead to big changes.

Let’s reframe that same belief:

New Thought: “I’m not a fan of traditional networking—but I can find a way to connect with people that feels authentic to me.”

New Feeling: A little more confident. Curious. Determined.

New Action: Start a casual conversation with a senior colleague. Ask your line manager to introduce you. Join a project group you’re interested in.

New Experience: People notice your strengths. You’re invited to contribute more. Unexpected opportunities show up.

New Belief: “Maybe networking isn’t so bad—it just looks different for me.”

Take Back the Power

This is what I love about coaching. It’s not about pretending everything’s fine. It’s about becoming aware of the thoughts that are keeping you small—and choosing to break the cycle. When you do, you create a new reality. One that brings you joy, growth, and purpose.

If this resonates with you—if you’re tired of being stuck in unhelpful patterns—I’d love to support you. Together, we’ll untangle the beliefs that are holding you back and build a mindset that helps you move forward with confidence.

You don’t have to stay stuck. Let’s work together to create a different kind of cycle—one that moves you forward.
